I wanted to put together a simple to follow journal that conveys the simplicity of small, stealthy, closet sized grow. For someone who can only grow in a space restrictive area, you will want to do what you can, within means, to maximize your results.
A few basic but key items to accomplish this indoors are:
Lighting – As an approximation you want 50 watts per square foot. With out proper light plant growth will be sub-par and blooming very weak.
Soil/soilless media (incl. nutrients) – A well aerated, good draining substrate with proper pH and correct nutrients for growth stage is a necessity for healthy roots & vigorous growth & bloom.
Proper environmental conditions – Temperature both ambient (air 70-85 degrees F) and at root zone (high 60’s – mid 70’s F) should be within the proper tolerances, airflow and ventilation are key to bring in fresh air and move it across the surface of the leaves.
Genetics – The proper strain is CRUCIAL in regards to your garden, for example, it would not be wise to try to go with a pure Sativa Thai, as your space would be overgrown long before flowering was done but an Indica dominant plant with short but well branched stature would be a better choice. Garbage in, garbage out… Be sure to start with genetics of known strain/phenotype from reputable breeders. Now I’ve seen some KILLER plants come from bag seed, but it is VERY hit & miss and with a limited grow area, the last thing you want to do is waste space and time.
Our Garden’s Stats
Garden Space – Starting off in a 3′ x 2′ area, I want to simulate a “Closet” style grow.
Lighting: We’re using the new Pro Grow 260X with 3 watt chip-sets and multi-lens system. Running at 260 watts (full draw).
Note* this equates to 43 watts per square foot, though it is less than the recommended 50 watts per square foot, it is important to note that wattage isn’t everything. Spectra (colors of light) is crucial for plant development, Pro-Grow LEDs are engineered to be powerful AND efficient.
Soil – Fox Farm’s Ocean Forest in 3 gallon Smartpots (fabric). The nutrients for this grow will be the General Organics line, starting at 50% of recommended quantities, then adjusting from there based on the plant’s growth.
Genetics – 3 – Northern Lights x Big Bud Autoflowering
From World of Seeds: …With a suitable size for growing indoor and outdoor, and it can reach a height of 1.7m. outdoors, and 1.3m indoors, depending on the size of the pot used. The plant has a perfect canopy, highly symmetrical; all the branches grow at the same height. The plants are usually tubular, not excessively tall, and produce large and dense buds covered by a lot of resin crystals with very high medicinal value, from which emanates a very strong aroma of sweet pineapple, or sweet citrus fruit such as mandarin. At the end of the flowering period the buds usually turns purple. This is our most medicinal automatic strain. This new generation of hybrid automatic plants will be a revolution.
Of the three Northern Lights x Big Bud Autoflower seeds started in soil on 7/26/12, two have sprouted and are now under the Pro-Grow 260X running 18/6 lighting.
For the time being, and as to not waste energy, I’m keeping a few cuttings and 2 Northern Light autoflowers in the tent as well until the NLxBBs are big enough to steal the show!
We’ll call this week one from seed and have a new update posted next week…
