In 1999, then-Warwick Mayor Lincoln D. Chafee won accolades for his honesty in acknowledging he used marijuana and cocaine as a 1970s student at Brown University.

Asked about the huge cost of prison spending during his 2010 run for governor, Chafee said a solution might be to lessen penalties for “lesser crimes” such as “low-level marijuana use.”

The Original Cash Crop: bushy, tasty, frosty!

But asked where Chafee stands on bills up for legislative hearing Wednesday to

legalize or decriminalize marijuana, spokeswoman Christine Hunsinger said he “doesn’t comment on bills until they get to his desk because of how much they can change.”

He thinks this is a “federal issue,” she said, and marijuana should be reclassified as a drug that can be sold, for medicinal purposes, at pharmacies.
