Marijuana is what’s called a Schedule I substance. The federal government has placed it on the same “forbidden” list as heroin.
But Dr. Igor Grant, director of the Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research (CMCR), and two other investigators have just published a study in The Open Neurology Journal, flatly stating that the Schedule I classification of marijuana is “not tenable.” CMCR is based at the University of California San Diego and has overseen extensive research on the therapeutic effects of cannabis. Their study categorically contradicts the government’s position: “It is not accurate that cannabis has no medical value, or that information on safety is lacking.”
Of course, DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart might be hard-pressed to agree. Check out her positively embarrassing performance before a House oversight hearing.
