Taking advantage of the Pro-Grow 260’s “Selective Spectrum”
I mentioned at the start, this is nearing my 4th grow using a model from the Pro-Grow LED grow light line from Hydroponics Hut. I’ve bloomed not only Indica strains, but Sativa dominant strains as well, all dense, tight & trichome coated!
Until the last grow, I never took advantage of the “Selective Spectrum” switches, I just ran “Full Spectrum,” figuring more (light) is better… and that’s true to a point… What can be deceptive about the Pro-Grow LEDs is that they run cool, and you have the tendency to think keeping the lights close (12″ or less) is necessary or advantageous, especially in the seedling or early to mid vegetative state. What I discovered, is that you end up with overly dense plants.
Now you may be thinking, “Too much light, too dense growth? You’re an idiot, WTF are you talking about, those are qualities you want!” Yes, but in moderation, let me explain my thinking & theory:
- Running both spectrums early on. – Okay, you can do this, I’ve done it. Growth will be stellar, but you are also using 2x the electricity and for that, the plants at this stage cannot utilize enough benefits from the red spectrum to justify using it.
- Keeping the Lamp closer for penetration. – Without a doubt, many LED grow lights NEED to be kept close to have any penetration*. The Pro-Grow LEDs utilize a proper mix of angled lenses and powerful LEDs that offer penetration AND a respectable footprint one would expect. I can keep the light higher from the canopy, get better overall coverage. The other issue in keeping the LEDs too close, is that does not allow the plant to have to “reach” for the light and plants may stay too compact, or so bushy the interior can get no light. A little (controlled) vertical growth is a good thing!
*This is primarily due to wide angle lenses (120º or even 160º) sacrificing power for footprint.
During the last grow, I was churning out cutting & seedlings. The area I had set-up was getting too warm throughout the day from the eight to ten 23 watt CFLs (184 – 230 watts), but the plants were doing fine. I swapped in the Pro-Grow for some of the CFLs. Returning the following afternoon, I was amazed to see the cabinet had cooled down just over 9 degrees and I saw how lush & perky the plants all looked, even my sickly cuttings. When I noticed the seedlings under the CFLs were all leaning towards the Pro-Grow, I ditched the rest of the CFLs. I was even more stunned when I realized all this happened using just the Vegetation Spectrum (The previous day, I had inadvertently shut off the full spectrum and was only running the Vegetation Spectrum (Blue/White LEDs). Even if you figure 60-80 watts at most, the growth provided by the Pro-Grow blew the coils off the CFLs.
Ever since then I was sold on using the selective spectrum switch on the Pro Grow LED Grow Lights.
With one day under our belts with the Pro Grow 260, I can say it is a HUGE step up from the 180 series. Brighter, far better penetration & coverage, and it is leaps and bounds over any unbranded eBay L.E.D. grow light, at any price, and thats not even counting the “Peace of Mind” warranty that comes with every Hydroponics Hut product.
